Freight Modes

The four modes of freight in defense logistics

Government and defense freight moves by road, air, sea and rail. Agencies and prime contractors — including requirements sourced through the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) — select the mode that fits the cargo, the destination and the delivery window. Cox Logistics arranges each movement through vetted, authorized carriers and mode partners rather than operating equipment.

Road & ground transportation

Dry van, flatbed, step-deck, refrigerated, oversize and specialized trailers. Road freight is the dominant mode for domestic government and defense shipments, and the primary entry point for motor carriers into military freight work.

Air freight

Used for urgent and time-critical cargo — expedited components, mission-support parts and response shipments — where the delivery window outweighs cost. Surface legs to and from air-cargo terminals are coordinated on the same file.

Ocean & sea freight

The workhorse for large-scale overseas movement and heavy equipment supporting OCONUS requirements, paired with port drayage, container coordination and documentation on each end.

Rail transportation

Economical for high-volume and heavy cargo over long domestic distances, typically combined with truck drayage between the ramp and the origin or receiving point.

Coordination Process

How a government shipment is coordinated

  1. 01

    Shipment details

Scope, freight characteristics, handling or security requirements, timelines and delivery constraints are captured in writing.

  2. 02

    Carrier match

Authorized motor carriers are vetted and matched to the shipment on operating authority, insurance, equipment and lane fit.

  3. 03

    Routing plan

Routing, scheduling, transfer points and backup options are confirmed and documented before pickup.

  4. 04

    Tracking & updates

Shipment status is tracked and reported on an agreed schedule, with any exception raised as it happens.

  5. 05

    Delivery & closeout

Delivery confirmation, paperwork and carrier performance notes are recorded and available for your file.

Scope of Role

Our role as a freight broker

Cox Logistics LLC arranges transportation between shippers and authorized motor carriers. We do not represent ourselves as a motor carrier and do not operate a company-owned fleet. Freight is transported by carriers holding their own operating authority and insurance.
